Tunisians had elected moderates to
form a government in parliamentary elections in October under a new
constitution approved in January. The
Islamists respected the process and gave up power, as the Interim President,
who has called for peace and respect for the democratic process, is expected to
do. The incoming President had invoked Tunisia ’s founder, Habib Bourguiba, a moderate
who had good relations with the United
States .
He has offered to be considerate of the opposition’s concerns and to
promote political reconciliation among Tunisians.
