Sergei Kovalev, In Memoriam
Sergei Kovalev, the Russian biologist who became a human rights activist during the Soviet era and who was imprisoned by the Soviets, died August 9 at 91. After the fall of Communism and the breakup of the Soviet Union, he spoke out against Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s war against Chechen separatists and the ex-Soviet intelligence officer's regression toward tyranny.
