The
presidential run-off election was held a week after parliamentary elections in Tunisia ,
a semi-presidential state. A
conservative populist was elected President of the young Arab representative
republic. The main moderately Islamist
party again won a plurality of seats in the Tunisian Parliament, but lost a
quarter of their number, leaving them with less than half of the total needed
for a majority. Secular parties from the
left to right won most of the rest of the seats, with a center-left party coming
in second. Another coalition government
will have to be formed.
The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded
to the Prime Minister of Ethiopia for initiating a peace deal with neighboring Eritrea ,
with which it had been at war for a decade over a border dispute.
